Connecting with Council[Français] June 2004Connecting with Council provides updates on key decisions made at the most recent Council meeting. The meeting agenda (June 9, June 10, June 10 - new Council) and motions passed at the Council meeting are on the website.
Highlights of key decisions made at the June 9 and 10 Council meetingsRegistration Regulation Amendments ProposedTo meet the changing health-care needs of the Ontario public, the education requirement for applicants applying for registration as RNs in Ontario will become a baccalaureate degree in nursing starting January 1, 2005. It is also anticipated that, on that date, the education requirement for applicants for registration as RPNs will become a diploma from a College of Applied Arts and Technology. (Note: The new requirements do not apply to RNs and RPNs registered with the College before January 1, 2005.) In June, Council approved draft amendments to the Registration regulation to provide fairness to applicants who have met the education requirement for registration by December 31, 2004 but have not yet successfully completed the national nursing examination, and to facilitate labour mobility for applicants from other Canadian jurisdictions. Notice of the proposed changes was mailed to all members with the June issue of The Standard. Members are asked to review the proposal and provide comment by August 23, 2004. A detailed explanation, the proposed regulation changes and instructions for response are available on the website. Council will receive a report on the feedback, and will make a final decision about the proposed changes at its next meeting (September 22-23). If approved by Council, the changes will be sent to the provincial government for final approval. Government approval is required for a regulation to become law. Practical Nursing Program ApprovalThe College is putting into place a rigorous program approval process to ensure that future Ontario RPNs graduate from an educational program that equips them to meet the needs of the public. Council appointed the following members to the Practical Nursing Program Approval Committee from June 2004 to June 2005: Educators:Sandy Brewer, Edmonde Briere, Carol Butler, Joan Gale RPNs:Debora Crowie, Jo-Ann Fekkes, Cheryl McMaster Clinical Administrators/Educators:Lynne Compton, Lynne Gray, Joseph Rudyk The Executive Committee was asked to appoint a member of the public with expertise in structuring and organizing curriculum. In September, Council will review a proposed bylaw to establish the committee as a Standing Committee of Council. Elections and AppointmentsThe following Council officers were elected: Sandra Ireland, RN as Council President and Sue Burnell-Jones, RN and Kathy Cook, RPN as Vice-Presidents. Members of the seven statutory committees were appointed. Click here for the list of committee members. [top] |
