Connecting with Council

[Français]

June 2005

Connecting with Council provides updates on key decisions made at the most recent Council meeting. The meeting agenda (June 8, June 9) and motions passed at the Council meeting are on the website.

Highlights of key decisions made at the June 8 and 9, 2005, Council meeting.

Telepractice practice guideline

The College’s Telephone Practice practice guideline was last updated in 1999. The guideline is being revised to reflect the advancement of technology and include current literature and resources on telepractice.

Council reviewed and provided feedback on a new draft of the Telepractice practice guideline and asked staff to revise the document, particularly as it relates to the RPN role in telepractice, and bring a revised draft to Council in September.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioners

Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) provide care to acutely ill, complex-care and vulnerable clients. In 2003, Council decided to explore the regulation of ACNPs within the Extended Class, which is a class for groups of nurses who require access to controlled acts beyond those authorized to RNs and RPNs.

Through consultation, it has been identified that there are three streams of Nurse Practitioner practice: primary health care, adult acute care and child acute care. At this time, only Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners are regulated in the Extended Class.

Council provided input into a document describing the three streams of practice, which will be used as a basis for further consultation and serve as a foundation for the development of standards and assessment tools for the proposed future addition of ACNPs to the Extended Class.

Officers and Committees

Sandra Keating, RN, was elected Council President, and Mary Ann Murray, RN, and Kathy Cook, RPN, were elected Council Vice- Presidents. Council and elected committee members were appointed to the seven statutory committees. Members of the Finance Committee, Compensation Sub-Committee and RPN Program Approval Committee were appointed.

A list of statutory committee members is published at www.cno.org and in the special Council and Committee supplement in this issue of The Standard.
