Nurse Practitioner practice standard approved
Over the past six months, Council has proposed legislative and regulatory amendments to remove the barriers to Nurse Practitioner practice and expand the Extended Class to include Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. Council has forwarded these proposals to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for enactment.
The controlled acts regulation that Council approved in September references Practice Standard: Performance of Controlled Acts by Nurse Practitioners. A draft of this standard was circulated to members and stakeholders for feedback in October. Twenty-six members and 16 organizations responded.
As a result of the feedback, the standard was revised to provide clarification and consistency, and to enhance flexibility and access to controlled acts by qualified practitioners. Council approved the revised practice standard which will come into effect when the government enacts the legislative and regulatory changes that were previously recommended by the College.

Proposed RN(EC) drug list expanded
In the September edition of The Standard, the College published the names of six drugs – four angiotensin II receptor blockers and two angiotensin II receptor antagonists – for inclusion in the list of drugs that RN(EC)s can prescribe. Three responses were received, and Council approved the drugs for forwarding to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

2007 budget approved
Council approved the 2007 budget. Revenues for 2007 are estimated at $22.6 million and expenses at $25.2 million, resulting in an estimated $2.6 million deficit for the year.
The College will use its accumulated surplus to fund operating expenses. (A breakdown of how your membership dollars are spent will be published in the June 2007 Standard.)
When the membership fee was approved in 2000, Council aimed to maintain the fee until 2005. Due to careful management and increased revenues, it is now anticipated that a fee increase to fund operations will not be required until 2011.
