Patient relations program
Council received a report on CNO’s patient relations program. The Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 requires every regulatory health college in Ontario to have a patient relations program to help health care professionals (in CNO’s case, nurses) enhance relationships with clients and members of the public. The program must also further the public’s understanding of the role of regulatory bodies and health care professionals, and inform the public that they can expect ethical, competent and sensitive care from health care professionals such as nurses. Most of CNO’s programs have an impact on patient relations. Here are two examples.
- CNO recently revised its program to resolve complaints. Resolutions provide for outcomes that address the concerns of the complainant, support the nurse in enhancing the quality of her or his care, and satisfy CNO’s mandate. Resolutions expedite outcomes and allow for CNO’s investigative resources to focus on the most serious of complaints.
- CNO’s Outreach Program supports nurses in practising in accordance with CNO’s practice standards and guidelines.

2008 budget approved
Council approved the 2008 budget. Revenues for 2008 are estimated at $24 million and expenses at $25.7 million, resulting in a $1.7 million deficit for the year. A breakdown of how your membership dollars are spent is published every year in the Spring issue of The Standard.
When the current membership fee was approved in 2000, Council’s goal was to maintain the fee until 2005. Due to careful management and increased revenues, it is now anticipated that a fee increase to fund operations will not be required until after 2011.
