Connecting with Council
June 2008

This document highlights key decisions made at the June 2008 Council meeting.

On this page:

2007 annual report

The College’s annual report for 2007 was presented to Council. The report is available as a PDF. The presentation is available as a webcast.

The report focuses on the College’s accomplishments with respect to the four key components of self-regulation: entry to practice, standards, quality assurance and enforcement.

Information from the College’s database on nursing employment is included in the presentation.

Fees By-Law amendment

The College’s philosophy is that the cost of applicant processes, such as registration examinations, are paid for by the applicant, and not through membership fees. The fee for the Practical Nurse Registration Examination has not increased for six years. An increase was proposed to address changes in the purchase cost of the examination and the College’s administrative costs.

In March, Council approved amendments to the Fees By-Law, for the purposes of consultation.

In June, Council received a report of the responses to the proposals and approved revisions to Articles 9.02 and 9.04 of the College’s Fees By-Law, increasing the fee for the RPN examination from $200.93 to $225 on June 1, 2008; $232 on June 1, 2010; and $240 on June 1, 2012. The fee for rescoring the RPN examination increased from $35 to $50 on June 1, 2008. The proposal to amend this by-law is on page 18 in the Spring 2008 issue of The Standard.

Medication practice standard revised

It is in the public interest that nurses have up-to-date guidance concerning their professional accountability in providing care related to medications. The College last revised its Medication practice standard in 2003. Feedback to the College identified that the standard is out of date and does not accurately reflect medication administration practices across the wide range of settings in which nurses practise. With research and extensive input from members, the practice standard was revised. Council approved Medication, Revised 2008, which will be sent to all members with the Summer edition of The Standard.

A list of statutory Committee members will be on the website and in the Council and Committee supplement in the Fall issue of The Standard.
