Strategic Plan update for 2007

The College’s strategic objectives set a long-range direction for the College as it moves forward into the future. Council received an annual update report on evidence that the College’s strategic objectives, and its activities to implement these objectives, are keeping the College on the path to regulatory excellence.

Governance enhancements

The College’s statutory committees play critical roles in self-regulation. At this meeting, Council made decisions to enhance the effectiveness of the statutory committees’ regulatory processes

.

Regulatory processes are growing increasingly complex, and regulatory decision-making is increasingly under scrutiny. Some Committees would benefit from particular expertise in carrying out their mandate. For example, the expertise of an educator would benefit the Registration Committee in assessing the programs and experiences of internationally educated nurses to determine equivalence to the competencies acquired in Ontario programs. To meet the need for expertise and other changing needs of statutory committees, Council decided that beginning in June 2009, statutory committee members will be appointed rather than elected.

Council has asked that a fair, transparent appointments process be developed and that criteria, such as geographic and employment diversity, be addressed in the process.

Part of effective governance is assuring that Committee functions are appropriately aligned. The Executive Committee has an overall leadership role and is kept informed of developments in all College regulatory programs.

Recognizing that all of the College’s regulatory programs contribute to the Patient Relations Program, the Council passed a by-law that will take effect in June 2008. At this time, the functions of the Client Relations Committee related to the Patient Relations Program will become part of the role of the Executive Committee.

Nurse Practitioners practice standard

Standards of practice guide members in providing quality care.

In August 2007, regulations were passed establishing new Nurse Practitioner speciality certificates. The Registered Nurses in the Extended Class practice standard was revised to reflect the new legislative framework. Council approved the revised practice standard, Nurse Practitioners.

Statutory committees

As part of their accountability to Council for effectively carrying out their statutory mandates, statutory committees presented annual reports of their activities.
