Statutory Committees
The College’s statutory committees have critical roles in self-regulation. Beginning in March 2008, Council made a number of decisions to enhance the effectiveness of regulatory processes that statutory committees carry out. Council also reviewed committee structures and roles to ensure the College can meet the requirements of the amendments to the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 coming into effect on June 4, 2009.
Previously, Council decided that non-Council statutory committee members would be appointed beginning in June. Council decided this would optimize participation and enhance the effectiveness of statutory committees.
Council is accountable for the effective functioning of statutory committees. To reflect this, Council passed by-laws that will put into place a new process for selecting the chairs of committees. Beginning immediately, chairs of committees will be appointed by the Council based on recommendation of the Executive Committee.
Currently, the Executive Committee reviews investigations ordered by the Executive Director and all incapacity matters, and determines whether further action is required. These functions will be moving to the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee.
Council approved revised Terms of Reference for the Executive Committee, reflecting the changes in its statutory role and other governance changes recently approved by Council.
