Council Sets the College's Direction for the Next Five Years

Council approved a new Strategic Plan that sets the direction for the College through 2010. The foundation for the plan is the College's mission — to protect the public's right to quality nursing services by providing leadership to the nursing profession in self regulation and vision — excellence in nursing practice everywhere in Ontario.

The plan builds on the outcomes of the 2002 - 2005 Strategic Plan with the following two objectives:

Building confidence in nursing self-regulation
nurse engagement - employer commitment - public confidence

Advancing the use of CNO knowledge
user relevance - stakeholder trust - decision support

With this new plan, CNO makes a commitment that College resources, such as standards, the Regional Education Network and practice consultation, will be relevant to nurses' practice realities. CNO also makes a commitment to work with nurses and employers in identifying and bringing to life a shared vision to support nurses and employers in providing quality care in quality practice settings.

The plan acknowledges the importance of the College's knowledge as a resource for the College, its members and stakeholders. Our concept of "College knowledge" is broad and includes the expertise that we have developed on regulation, the expertise shared by our members during consultations, as well as the data that we collect about nursing human resources in Ontario.

The College recognizes that issues related to the provision of quality care need to be addressed in partnership. It is important that CNO have a voice in the development of key policies that impact on the health-care system. Over the next five years, CNO will focus on becoming a key player in public policy initiatives related to health and regulation.

More information on the new plan will be provided in the March edition of The Standard.
