Nurse Practitioner Examinations

As part of the process for becoming a Nurse Practitioner in Ontario, an applicant must successfully complete one of several examinations approved by Council.

Primary Health Care specialty certificate

  • The Canadian Nurses Association: Canadian Nurse Practitioner Examination (writes from 2005 and onward)
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination
    Note: This examination is not offered in Ontario. It was approved to facilitate mobility for nurses from the U.S., as well as for Canadian nurses who passed the exam after Sept. 30, 2001.

  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center: Paediatric Nurse Practitioner Examination (writes from 2002 and onward)
  • The National Certification Corporation: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification (writes from 1994 and onward)
    Note: This exam is not offered in Ontario. To make arrangements to write this exam, contact NCC directly. Once you are notified that you have passed the exam, or if you have successfully completed this exam since 1994, please submit the notarized results to the College. 
  • The Paediatric Nursing Certification Board: Paediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Certification Examination (writes from December 1995 and onward)
    Note: This exam is not offered in Ontario. It was approved to facilitate mobility for nurses from the U.S. as well as for Canadian nurses who have passed the exam. If you successfully completed this exam in or after December 1995, please submit the notarized results to the College.
  • The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec’s Certification Examination for Nurse Practitioners Specializing in Neonatology (writes from 2006 and onward)
