I’ve noticed in many Practice Standards and Guidelines the word “procedure” is used. How does the College define this?
At the College, the word “procedure” has a broad definition. “Procedure” includes actions involving controlled acts, non-controlled acts, and any action or activity nurses use in the course of providing client care. It is not intended to be narrowly defined or to only include hands-on tasks.
Nurses engage in many procedures and activities in the course of their practice to establish and maintain a therapeutic nurse-client relationship, such as performing specific procedures and activities to implement and evaluate a client’s plan of care. NPs perform procedures to assess, diagnose and therapeutically manage clients.
