Orders via video conference call

I’m an RN working in a remote-area clinic. Sometimes I use video conference calls to consult with a physician in another town. Can I accept a medication order from a physician via video conference call?

Yes. New technology used in health care has made it possible to have new methods of receiving orders remotely, such as video conference calls.

An order received via video conference call is a verbal order. The College does not require nurses to ensure that verbal orders are signed by the ordering practitioner but your employer may require this.

You can read about expectations regarding verbal orders in the Authorizing Mechanisms practice guideline.
