Component 2: Practice Assessment
Each year, the College randomly selects nurses to participate in Practice Assessment, which includes a review of the member's completed Learning Plans and other specified assessments (such as an objective multiple-choice test on the two practice documents selected for the program).
Members become eligible for Practice Assessment after two years of registration. Members of the General and Transitional Class will be randomly selected to participate in practice assessment; once selected, the member will be exempt for 10 years. NPs will be selected on a cyclical basis to participate in QA; once selected, they will be exempt from the process for a minimum of five years.
Are you an NP?
The College may also require NPs to participate in additional assessments.
Chart Review and Interview
The first phase of this assessment is based on chart-stimulated recall, which involves the nurse using a client chart to reflect on the application of the NP core competency framework and the Nurse Practitioner practice document. The second phase involves a behavioural-based interview that will focus on more general, situation-based questions that reflect the application of the core competencies.
Practice Simulation
Practice Simulation is a clinical assessment that is made up of a series of stations, some with standardized clients, which the NP rotates through. The assessment provides a standardized means to assess the NP’s physical examination, history-taking skills, communication skills, and ability to make a diagnosis and recommend treatment and a plan of care.
