Self-Assessment FAQs
1. Is it mandatory to complete a Learning Plan?
Yes, completing a Learning Plan is a mandatory requirement of the QA Program. You are expected to update your Learning Plan on a continual basis and keep it for two years. If you are randomly selected for Component 2: Practice Assessment, your Learning Plan will be assessed by a Peer Assessor.
2. How can I link my employer performance evaluation with the requirements of the QA Program?
The College encourages nurses to share the requirements of the QA Program with their employers, and ask how they can link the regulatory requirements with their employer performance assessments. The Learning Plan allows you to identify your learning goals based on the practice documents selected for the year's QA Program. You can also incorporate the learning goals or activities identified in your employer performance evaluation into your Learning Plan.
3. Are there resources available to help me with the Self-Assessment component of the QA Program?
Yes, the College has developed resources to help you meet the requirements of Component 1: Self-Assessment, such as the Self-Assessment: A Guide to Developing Your Learning Goals and Learning Plan 2012 document, which includes instructions on completing your Practice Reflection and learning goal pages. Additional resources are available on the QA section of the website. In addition, you are encouraged to use the resources available in your practice environment (for example, continuing education courses, teleconferences and nursing journals).
4. What are the required elements that must be included in my Learning Plan?
The required elements are:
- advances in technology
- changes in the practice environment
- entry-to-practice competencies
- interprofessional care.
When completing your Learning Plan, select the element(s) you reflected on while developing and achieving your learning goals.
For definitions and examples of the required elements, read the QA Glossary.
