NPs and prescribing controlled substances: Opportunity to give feedback

On Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, the College will send proposed regulations to nurses and stakeholders for feedback. Once approved, the regulations will enable Ontario NPs to prescribe controlled substances.

To support safe implementation of this new area of practice, the proposed regulations include a condition: NPs must meet an education requirement before they can prescribe controlled substances.

On Friday, Dec. 16, we will send an email to NPs about the education requirement.

We are also seeking feedback about other proposed by-law changes. These will allow the College to post and remove information about prescribing and managing controlled substances on an NP’s profile in Find a Nurse.

We will be collecting all feedback until Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.

More information will appear in the next issue of The Standard. We will email the issue to all Ontario nurses and stakeholders on Thursday, Dec. 15. Watch your email inbox or visit www.cno.org/standard.

At its March 2017 meeting, Council will review the feedback and make a decision on the proposed regulation and bylaws.
