Additional criminal charges laid against former Ontario nurse
On January 13, 2017, the OPP charged former Ontario Nurse Elizabeth Tracy Mae Wettlaufer with four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault. These charges are in addition to eight charges of first-degree murder laid against her on October 25, 2016.
Ms Wettlaufer resigned her membership with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) on Sept 30, 2016, which means she is no longer entitled to practise nursing in Ontario. All publicly available information the College has on Ms Wettlaufer, including all criminal charges against her and information about her ability to practise in Ontario, is posted on the public register Find a Nurse available on www.cno.org.
The College is exercising its legal authority to investigate Ms Wettlaufer’s conduct. These latest charges will be covered by our investigation.
We believe strongly in public disclosure and transparency. However, what we can disclose publicly is limited due to the current criminal proceedings, our own role as an investigator and confidentiality requirements under various laws. Maintaining the integrity of the investigative and hearing processes is necessary in order to ensure a fair outcome in the public interest.
We extend our profound sympathies to the families affected by this case.
