2012 Election: Nominations

Elections for 2012 will take place in:

Electoral district 1,  Southwestern district

Composed of the counties of Elgin, Essex, Huron, Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, Oxford and Perth

  • 2 RN, 1 RPN Council members will be elected

Electoral district 2, Central Western district

Composed of the counties of Brant, Bruce, Grey, Wellington and Dufferin and the regional municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk, Hamilton-Wentworth, Niagara and Waterloo.

  • 2 RN and 1 RPN Council members will be elected

Electoral district 9,  Central-Toronto district

  • Composed of the municipality of metropolitan Toronto, the County of Simcoe and the regional municipalities of Halton, Peel and York.
  • 1 RPN Council member will be elected

Voter eligibility

To be eligible to vote, a member must:

  • hold a current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in either the General or Extended Class;
  • not be in default of payment of fees; and
  • work or reside (if not working in nursing) in the electoral district in which the election is being held.

Nurses vote in the election by mailing their ballots to an independent company, which compiles the results.

RNs (including Nurse Practitioners) vote for RNs, RPNs vote for RPNs

Time commitment

Council members attend four, one-day Council meetings each year. Council members participate on a statutory committee and can also participate on a standing committee.

The College provides Council and committee members with a daily stipend of $250 for attending meetings and, in specific circumstances, it will provide a daily stipend for preparatory time and travel. The College also covers travel expenses, within specific policies.

If you are considering running for election, the College recommends that you discuss the time commitment with those who might be affected, such as your employer. If elected, it is important that you are available to participate on Council and committees.

Because Council members are also called to serve on committees, candidates should be aware of the time commitment involved for the College’s various committees:
