What is a ZIP file?

A ZIP file acts like a folder that contains one or more larger files that have been compressed into smaller file sizes. ZIP filenames end with the ".zip" extension.

What benefits do ZIP files offer?

Besides improving storage by compressing files, ZIP files can contain folders and sub-folders, keeping multiple files organized. Taking the Compendium as an example, you can download one ZIP file containing all 47 Compendium documents instead of opening and saving documents one by one.

What do I need to open a ZIP file?

Open ZIP files using software like WinZip. You can download a free trial version of WinZip (http://www.winzip.com). This software allows you to open ZIP files and create your own. Windows XP has a built-in function that let's you open zip files.

What's the best way to view files stored in a ZIP file?

To properly download and access documents in a ZIP file:

  1. Download the ZIP file, taking note where you save it on the computer.
  2. Create a new folder on your computer in which you want to store the documents contained in the ZIP file. For example, create a folder on the C drive called "compendium". (e.g. C:\compendium)
  3. Activate the ZIP software and click on "Open".
  4. In the window that pops up, locate the downloaded ZIP file and click on "Open". A list of files and folders contained in the ZIP files is displayed in an unorganized fashion.
  5. Select all (Edit → Select All) and click the "Extract" button.
  6. A window will pop up describing what you are about to do. Under the "Extract to" field, locate the folder you created in Step 2. Choose the "C:\compendium" folder and click "Extract".
  7. You're done! Check the folder you created to view the extracted files and folders.
