Quality Practice - Summer 2008 Volume 7 Issue 2 Print
Compendium updated
To capture the changes in the recent Nurse Practitioner regulations, the College has updated selected documents in its Compendium of Standards of Practice for Nurses in Ontario.
The practice standards and guidelines now reflect the Ontario government’s August 2007 NP regulations. For example, the Registered Nurse in the Extended Class [RN(EC)] title has been changed to the new protected title, Nurse Practitioner (NP). The four new NP specialty certificates are now included in the Compendium.
Only the title of one practice guideline was updated: Medical Directives is now called Directives. The new title reflects the more inclusive role NPs can play in the writing of directives.
The recent GST change and new information have been incorporated into the Compendium’s registration fact sheets.
All revisions are minor. The content of the Compendium remains essentially the same. If you have a recent Compendium, it is not necessary to replace it with the updated version.
In 2009, though, the College will make major revisions to the Compendium in response to the Health System Improvements Act, 2007 which amends the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Nursing Act, 1991. Most of the new Act’s amendments come into effect in June 2009.
