The Canadian Men in Nursing Group

Canadian Association for International Nursing (CAIN)

The Canadian Association for International Nursing (CAIN), a Canadian Nurses Association-recognized national special interest group formed in 2007, aims to enhance awareness, education and dialogue amongst nurses and health care practitioners interested in global health. CAIN now has a website and a Facebook forum, and is building a database of nurses working internationally. The group aims to partner with other national nursing associations, international NGOs and schools of nursing offering their students international nursing experience. Canadian Association of Nurses for Women and Newborns

The newly formed Canadian Association of Nurses for Women and Newborns (Association infirmiére canadienne pour femmes et nouveau-nés) is seeking members. Comprised of nurses from all regions of Canada, the organization aims to:

  • promote exemplary standards in perinatal (maternity) and women’s health nursing practice, research and education;
  • advocate for Canadian women, newborns and families in health matters;
  • represent Canadian nurses in policy development;
  • provide continuing nursing educational opportunities; and
  • represent nurses in multidisciplinary collaborative projects.

Aboriginal Nurses Association of Ontario (ANAO) Interest Group

  1. April 24, 2009: This one-day seminar on Mature Women’s Health Care will address the common issues related to woman as they age and assist health care providers with up-to-date knowledge to care for an aging client population. There will be a special focus this year on the topic of menopause with an emphasis on Hormone Replacement Therapy.
  2. May 13, 200: The theme of the 17th Annual Symposium – New Developments in Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical symposium is consideration of psychological/ethical/legal and religious aspects of reproductive biology and pregnancy interruption as well as breakthroughs in the fields of psychiatric genetics, fragile X and pharmacogenetics.
  3. May 22, 2008: The 6th Annual Refresher in Primary Maternity Care will review the common problems encountered in the antepartum and intrapartum period and will facilitate discussion and learning around current controversies in primary maternity care.
  4. Nov. 6, 2009: Caesarean Section Update 2009 will provide a review of the basic advances and techniques in performing caesarean sections and evaluate evidence-based care for CS patients. This course will also review and explore management of difficult clinical problems associated with caesarean sections, as well as emerging trends.
  5. Nov. 7, 2009: The Medical Disorders course will provide practical information and approaches to the diagnosis and management of common problems that affect the mother and fetus using a case-based approach.

Basic Infection Prevention and Control

Registration for the online course in Basic Infection Prevention and Control hosted by the Office of Continuing Professional Development, Queen's University is now open. The intended registrants for this course are primarily those currently working in infection control. Ontario Network of Sexual Assault/DV Treatment Centres

The Ontario Network of Sexual Assault/DV Treatment Centres (SA/DVTC) is offering health care providers free on-line training on HIV and HIV Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as it relates to sexual assault. At the completion of the training modules, the learner will be able to discuss the history of HIV along with the incidence rate and prevalence of HIV in Ontario; counsel and assess HIV risk in people who have experienced sexual assault; recommend HIV PEP; outline potential side effects and coping methods; and know when an HIV specialist should be consulted. Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network

The Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network has developed a transfusion administration program for nursing professionals, available at www.transfusionontario.org/public-en/resource-centre/bloody-easy-resources.php (scroll down). Nurses can access the two-module e-learning program, called Bloody Easy for Nurses, developed specifically for healthcare professionals administering blood products. The modules take approximately 90 minutes to complete.

International Interprofessional Wound Care

The University of Toronto is offering an International Interprofessional Wound Care course at the New Women's College Hospital, 76 Grenville St. in Toronto, on Sept. 24-27, 2009. Volunteers Needed

IMAGINE is currently seeking volunteer RN Mentors for clinic hours (to commence in October 2009).

IMAGINE is an interprofessional clinic run by students from all the health faculties at the University of Toronto. It was initiated by students in the Faculty of Medicine at U of T in 2007. IMAGINE has been running health promotion workshops since November 2008 in partnership with St. Christopher House, a neighbourhood centre in downtown Toronto that works with a primarily aboriginal population with low or fixed incomes. IMAGINE anticipates seeing its first clinic patients in October 2009; clinic hours will be Saturdays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Queen West Community Health Clinic. New Services

Electronic Newborn Registration Service

ServiceOntario has launched an electronic birth registration service to give parents and medical professionals a faster, easier way to complete birth registration documents, either electronically or on paper, and submit them directly to the Office of the Registrar General. It is estimated the project will take until the end of 2009 to complete province-wide. Click here for a list of the communities where the fully electronic Newborn Registration Service is now available.
