Medication Safety in Community Healthcare

ISMP Canada is presenting a one-day medication safety learning forum for Ontario community healthcare practitioners on Thursday, May 8, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place at the BMO Institute for Learning, 3550 Pharmacy Ave., Scarborough, Ont. The cost is $100 per person. Topics include medication reconciliation and the link to community pharmacy; human factors’ impact on medication safety; medication incidents in community healthcare: A coroner’s perspective; and warfarin management in the community. Guest speakers include Andrew McCallum, MD, FRCPC, Regional Supervising Coroner for Eastern Ontario, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services; and Andrea Cassano-Piché, MSc, Human Factors Engineer, Healthcare Human Factors Group, Medical Engineering University Health Network, Toronto. Health Care Workshop 2008

The Ontario Camping Association is holding a workshop on camp health care on May 10, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Crescent Day School, 2365 Bayview Ave., Toronto. Presentations topics include allergies and anaphylaxis, College of Nurses, first aid, management of asthma, new camp nurse, medications at camp, heat and sun safety, and more. The Canadian Association of Medical and Surgical Nurses (CAMSN) is seeking feedback from members on the first draft of national standards for certification for medical-surgical nursing. The first draft has been developed by a group of expert medical-surgical nurses representing all regions of Canada and supported by the CAMSN and Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). Plans are to offer certification in 2010.

Volunteers needed

McMaster University is looking for volunteers who have completed health professional training outside of Canada and who have immigrated here to work to participate in the following studies:

  1. The experiences of internationally trained health workers in the long-term and home care sectors in Canada; and
  2. The experiences of internationally educated health professionals who migrate to Canada

Participation involves a phone or in-person interview of 60 to 90 minutes. Participants will receive an honorarium of $25.

Healthy Pregnancy for Great Life Beginnings: Maternal Adversity, Vulnerability and Neurodevelopment (MAVAN)

The Women’s Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is looking for volunteers to take part in a large-scale prospective study on the effects of stress, anxiety and depression in pregnant women on their babies. Participation will include a number of clinic and home visits, beginning between 12- 24 weeks gestation and concluding at 36 months.
