Nursing and labour mobility across Canada

New legislation simplifies registration process for nurses registered in other provinces or territories

The Ontario Labour Mobility Act, 2009, which came into effect December 15, 2009, is legislation that facilitates the mobility of nurses from one Canadian province or territory to another.

Although there are some exceptions, nurses who are able to provide proof of current registration as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, or as a Nurse Practitioner in the Adult, Primary Health Care or Paediatrics specialties in another Canadian province or territory, and who meet other specified registration requirements, are eligible to become registered in Ontario without undergoing additional training, experience, testing or assessment.

While the Act is intended to make it easier for skilled workers to move from province to province, all nursing applicants to Ontario, even those registered in other Canadian provinces or territories, should note they are still required to meet Ontario’s specified registration requirements and must become registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in order to practise in Ontario.

This Act affects only those nurses who are currently registered in another Canadian province or territory and who have already applied to the College or who are interested in applying to the College.
