FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASENew Guide Aimed at Helping International NursesMAY 9, 2003 The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) today launched an important new e-factsheet an interactive Web guide designed to help international nurses become registered to practise in Ontario. The Registration Guide for Internationally Educated Nurses is a detailed, interactive tour through a registration process that ensures all Ontario nurses have the skills and competencies to provide safe, effective care to the public. We have nurses from around the world wanting to practice in Ontario. With this new Guide, they can quickly review the requirements to become an Ontario nurse and assess their current credentials, said Anne Coghlan, RN, Executive Director of CNO. More and more international nurses are applying for Ontario registration every year. The number of international applicants has risen nearly 75% to 2,659 in 2002 from 741 in 1998. Helping international applicants understand and meet the requirements for registration is another way in which the College protects the public by ensuring that all nurses registered in Ontario have the knowledge, skill and judgement to provide quality nursing services. Located on the College website at www.cno.org, the Guide can be accessed from anywhere in the world. The Guide is the result of joint efforts by the Access to Professions and Trade Unit of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and CNO, and is part of the Ministrys e-factsheet initiative. CNO regulates the Ontario nursing profession to protect the public. The College ensures that all nurses have met the basic requirements for safe nursing practice, sets the standards of nursing practice, operates a quality assurance program, and responds to concerns about nursing practice. There are 140,000 registered nurses (RNs) and registered practical nurses (RPNs) in Ontario. Only those with a valid Certificate of Registration from CNO can practice as a nurse in Ontario and use the titles nurse, registered nurse, or registered practical nurse. - 30 - For more information, please contact: Cindy Campbell, Manager, Communications
