Nursing statistics report covers the last decade in Ontario

Toronto — The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is pleased to announce the release of its newly-formatted Membership Statistics Report at January 1, 2004. The report includes the most current statistics, a wide range of data and a discussion of prevailing trends.

As the primary source of nursing demographics in the province, the College has experienced a greater demand for nursing employment data because of the increasing focus on nursing human resource issues at the national and provincial levels. By providing more detailed analysis of nursing-related data in its yearly Membership Statistics Report, the College feels it will better meet the needs of stakeholders requesting information.

“This information is invaluable to our stakeholders as they make decisions around human resources and policy development,” says Anne Coghlan, RN, Executive Director.

The College collects comprehensive employment data from every nurse in Ontario. This data is compiled from the Annual Membership Renewal form, which nurses must complete on a yearly basis in order to renew their membership and practise nursing in Ontario. On this form, nurses answer questions around employment status, areas of practice and type of employer. Their answers are the basis for the statistics provided in this report.

The new format provides stakeholders with the most up-to-date nursing statistics available. The report illustrates nursing trends by compiling data from the last 10 years into easy-to-read tables. It also provides in-depth analysis of the data and trends, helping stakeholders to interpret CNO statistics.

CNO’s Membership Statistics Report, 2004 is available online and can be downloaded from the CNO website at www.cno.org.

CNO’s mission is to protect the public’s right to quality nursing services by providing leadership to the nursing profession in self-regulation. CNO establishes the entry requirements for new nurses, sets and enforces the practice standards, and operates a variety of programs to support and ensure nurses’ ongoing
competence.
