Ontario Government approves change to Registered Practical Nurse education requirement

Toronto — The Ontario government has approved the College of Nurses of Ontario’s (CNO) recommended changes to the education requirement for Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) registration. Effective January 1, 2005, a diploma in practical nursing from a College of Applied Arts and Technology (or equivalent education) is a requirement for all new applicants for RPN registration.

Government passed the diploma (or equivalent) requirement into law on December 9, 2004. This regulation change affects new applicants only, not current members of the College, and is a nonexemptible requirement for registration.

The change to a two-year diploma program from a certificate program will provide new RPNs with the knowledge necessary to face the challenges of today’s complex health care system.
