Medication

Ensuring the safe, effective and ethical administration of medications is an important component of nursing care. As with any treatment, administering a medication requires knowledge, technical skills and judgement. The Medication practice standard outlines nurses accountablities when administering medications in all practice settings.

Objectives

  1. Identify the nursing accountability and process related to medication administration.
  2. Describe the nurse’s role in relation to transcribing orders dispensing and repackaging medication.
  3. State the conditions contributing to medication errors and nursing responsibiltiy when errors occur.
  4. Discribe nursing role and responsibility related to administering allergy and immunization agents, sedation and placebos.
