Nurse Practitioners

All nurses, including Nurse Practitioners (NPs), have the professional obligation to ensure safe, effective and ethical practice. As Registered Nurses with supplementary education and experience, NPs have the legal authority to perform additional controlled acts and other authorized activities. The Nurse Practitioners practice standard describes the competencies specific to and the expectations of NPs.

The content of this module was accurate as of December 22, 2009. However, changes to provincial legislation, as a result of Bill 179, will require the College to update the Nurse Practitioners practice standard in the future. The College will communicate these changes, along with the latest legislation and documents regarding NP practice, on the website and through various College publications, for example The Standard.

Objectives

  1. Explain the standard of practice for NPs, including their accountability, authority, and limitations or conditions related to the NP practice.
  2. Articulate the responsibilities of NPs regarding interprofessional care, i.e. consulting with physicians and collaborating with other health care professionals.
  3. Identify the components of continuing competence and quality assurance for NPs, in order to improve their practice and maintain public confidence.
