Learn more about Patient Safety

The College of Nurses of Ontario is committed to addressing health care issues that affect nursing practice, and sharing information with members about important topics, such as patient safety.

In February 2004, CNO formed a Patient Safety Advisory Group in response to growing concern across Canada regarding preventable adverse events. CNO, and the nursing profession as a whole, is aware of the potential for preventable adverse events within the health care system. For example, CNO supported the removal of potassium chloride (KCl) from hospital nursing stations. The Quality Practice Settings Attributes found in the College's Practice Setting Consultation Program® promote reliable care delivery processes, communication systems and organizational supports, all of which play important roles in the prevention of adverse events.

CNO's Patient Safety Advisory Group is building a body of knowledge about patient safety and actions taken in other jurisdictions. Some of that information has been posted in this special section for members who want to educate themselves further about patient safety issues.
