Membership SuspensionQI recently received a letter from the College telling me that my membership is going to be suspended. What does this mean and what should I do? AWhat you received is a notice of intent to suspend your registration. The College sends notices of impending suspension to members who have failed to complete and return their Annual Membership Renewal form or pay their fees by a set date. If your membership is suspended, it is illegal for you to work as a nurse in Ontario or to use the protected titles of RN, RPN or nurse. An updated list of suspended individuals is posted on the College’s website each April. If you want to continue to practise nursing in Ontario this year, contact the College’s Customer Service Centre immediately — before you name is published on the suspension list. Nurses formally suspended need to apply for reinstatement. The reinstatement process requires payment of any outstanding membership and late fees, as well as an additional reinstatement fee. Once the membership is reinstated, the nurse’s name is removed from the suspension list. If you meant to terminate your membership or permanently retire from nursing at the end of 2005 but did not return your renewal form, this may explain why you received a suspension notice. Section O of the renewal form contains a part where nurses can indicate their intent to resign their membership. Nurses do not have to complete the entire form if they plan to resign, but the College does need the form signed, dated and with Section O completed. For more information on suspension, visit the Registration section of the College website, www.cno.org. [top] |
