In Praise of Nurses

Accepted are original signed letters from the client/family member or an original signed letter from the facility/agency with a copy of the author’s letter, and the author’s approval to publish it. Letters may be condensed for publication.

I am writing this letter to let you know of the exemplary care my mother received at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London.

I admitted my mother from her nursing home to St. Joseph’s ER so that she could be cross-matched and receive two units of blood. From the minute we arrived at the ER the nurses were wonderful to my mother. They were kind, did not rush her, explained all procedures and were very patient.

She needed to be admitted for further transfusions and investigations and was placed on nursing unit 6D. The staff on this unit were absolutely wonderful. They treated my mother with compassion, kindness, patience and respect. Her nursing care was tremendous.

They also treated me with respect. At the time of her admission, weather conditions prevented me from visiting. I called daily to speak with her nurses. They answered all my questions and had the doctors call me back with test results.
We so often hear the negative reports of our practice as nurses that I felt compelled to shout the praises of these nurses and to say “thank you.” St. Joseph’s Hospital should feel honoured to have nurses of this caliber.

Just a note to commend the nurses at the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre in Owen Sound.

My husband and I arrived in the emergency unit of the hospital after a very long drive from Tennessee. I had a fractured right leg and ankle — yet to be treated.
The triage nurse was kind and compassionate and expedited things very quickly. She also followed up later to see how I was managing.

Every one of the nurses I saw during my initial visit was kind, efficient, comforting and encouraging. My safety and comfort were always a priority and my pain relief a concern. I felt so well cared for, so secure in the care I was receiving, I had very little anxiety about the surgery I was facing.

Post-surgery, I was attended to, kept comfortable, reassured and felt I was receiving the best of what nursing has to offer.

Since my initial admission, I have had to return twice for cast adjustments and have encountered the same cheerful, caring, kind and competent response from the nursing staff. I appreciate it. I applaud it.

When Vicki Lackey, RN, started her usual shift at Kingston General Hospital, little did she know how much her evening was going to change. She was caring for a woman who had surgery with cardiac complications. She could not know she would end up spending the night in the ER caring for a family in crisis.

We can only say thank you, Vicki, from the bottom of our hearts for your outstanding compassion and caring. You went beyond the call of duty and helped our family through one of the most traumatic nights of our lives. Your patient became a family that night when your patient’s son was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident.

You accepted no thanks but went quietly and efficiently about your duties, while trying to manage what was happening on your own ward. It is outstanding people like you who make the world a better place.

The good news is mom and son are improving, thanks to a lot of love and devotion, and your tender loving care.

Love and best wishes to you in your future.

In the early morning hours of April 12, 2004, my father Bill Lediard experienced a severe heart attack. Upon his arrival at Huronia District Hospital in Midland, the emergency team of doctors and nurses were incredibly diligent and compassionate.

They quickly realized he needed more specialized care, and he was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Once again, the entire Coronary Care Unit was outstanding.

At Huronia District Hospital and St. Michael’s our family witnessed nursing care at its finest. They not only treated the ailing patient but provided compassion and care for our family. This is to be applauded.

My father is very special to me, and I felt very special to all who cared for him.
Please accept my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the health professionals who gave my father the compassionate care he received.

I recently had surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital and had to remain in hospital for post-surgery.

I wanted to write to you and compliment the nursing staff who looked after my recovery. They were diligent, caring, kind, efficient, competent and clearly overworked. At a time when we read daily about our beleaguered health system, I thought I would simply compliment the College of Nurses of Ontario for the fine work that its members do to ensure that the delivery of care is not compromised.
