New report captures a decade of nursing

A new report from the College gives an in-depth look into the nursing profession.

The Membership Statistics Report shows a 10 year snapshot of nursing in Ontario as of January 1, 2004 and is expected to be a valuable document for the College and stakeholders such as government policy makers and professional organizations.

The report, available on the College’s website at www.cno.org, will be updated every year using the information nurses provide on their Annual Membership Renewal form.

What’s in the report?

At almost 200 pages, the report includes membership highlights such as top five employers and primary areas of practice and offers several graphs. There are more than 200 statistical charts about Ontario nurses.

The report also offers a regional breakdown of the numbers. The membership is divided by electoral region to show employment trends. This will give planners and policy makers a more accurate picture of nursing resources in each region.

Why did the College develop this report?

The College receives regular requests for data about Ontario nurses. Over the last few years, there has been an increase in requests for more in-depth statistics about nurses. As the College is the only place that can provide these numbers, this new statistical report is a proactive approach to getting the information out to the relevant groups.

How does the College collect the data?

All the information in the report was provided by members through their Annual Membership Renewal form. Each year we aggregate the data from the forms to get a picture of nursing in the province.

Who will use the information in the report?

We expect a number of different groups will find this report interesting. Government policy makers will use the information when developing policy. Nursing unions and associations will use the report when lobbying the government. Researchers will use the report for their work on nursing in the province. Our members will learn how their renewal information is used, and can see how and where there profession is working across the province.

What’s the next step?

We’re already thinking about refinements and additions for next year’s report. It’s already renewal season again, so the process starts all over again.
