Letters to the Editor

Since graduating from nursing in 1980 I’ve read every Communiqué cover to cover and then filed them for future reference.

I was disappointed with the new magazine The Standard. It seems more like a catalogue. With the volume of literature a nurse has to review, I found it time consuming and, therefore, annoying, to flip through all the advertising to get to
the meat of the publication. Now when I file The Standard, I am filing useless bulky advertising too.

Patient Safety

I would like to comment on an article that appeared in the September issue
of The Standard. As a registered nurse with 33 years of experience, I am
interested in any strategy that will reduce the potential for error in caring
for clients. I was, therefore, happy to read some results from the Canadian
Adverse Events Study.

However, I was dismayed to discover that a suggested solution was to provide nurses with a vest to be worn while in the process of fluid or drug administration in order to send a “Do Not Disturb” message and prevent distraction and interruption. While this might work in a test environment, it does not take into account the circumstances in which most of us find ourselves working. This is an environment with ever increasing patient acuity and shrinking human resources; one in which this suggestion is not only impractical but even a little silly. I hope that the remaining suggestions for addressing this very serious
problem are more helpful.
