Exploring the power of knowledge translation

As part of its continual effort to support members to develop and maintain quality practice settings, the College has created a pilot project that is bringing College staff and nurses together to explore how to enhance client care by integrating practice standards into practice settings.

Called the Knowledge Translation Fellowship (KTF),this pilot project has partnered nurse leaders from a variety of facilities with College staff to develop and lead projects that will incorporate the nursing standards into their practice environments.

Health care settings involved in the project are Cancer Care Ontario; the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health; the Workplace Safety Insurance Board; Providence Healthcare; Saint Elizabeth HealthCare; and the Community Care Access Centre in North York. As well, the School of Nursing at York University is involved in the project’s design and evaluation.

KTF projects range from clinically specific topics, such as developing assessment tools, policies and documentation guidelines regarding dehydration, to examining scope of-practice issues. The project started in March and will run until the end of June. Because the College is particularly interested in sustainability, these projects will be evaluated over the summer months, and again in December, to determine their impact over time.

This new consultation service is an innovative way for the College to enhance its role with practice settings across sectors and dimensions, of practice to reach a broader audience, thereby ensuring sustainability of the practice standards in practice settings.

The project is also providing a forum for discussion that will help the College gain a better understanding of the realities of different practice settings and how CNO can support nurses in their jobs. If the pilot is successful, the College will explore options to offer this consultation service across the province. Watch for updates in the next issue of The Standard.
