Teleconference brings College to LTC nurses“The long-term care teleconference series is designed to help the College become more familiar with the realities of the long-term care practice settings and to provide opportunities for all of us to engage in collective problem solving,” – Heather Campbell, RN, Director, Practice and Policy
As the regulatory body for nurses in Ontario, one of the College’s responsibilities is to support its members and stakeholders in self-regulation. One way the College is doing this in 2005 is through a series of long-term care teleconferences. “From the feedback we’ve received from participants, our first teleconference was a huge success,” says Campbell. “This is just one way for the College to support the long term care sector.” The first in the series, Accountability of Nurse Leaders took place on March 29 and proved to be a successful way for the College, nurse leaders, administrators and employers in the long-term care sector to network, share ideas and knowledge, and discuss current issues regarding accountability. Click here for the highlights of this teleconference. Interested to hear what the College and their colleagues had to say on the topic of accountability, more than three times the expected number of participants registered for the teleconference. The teleconference included discussion from College staff on the issues facing long-term care nurses and strategies for integrating the standards into their practice settings. Guest speaker Helen Ferley, RN, Program Director for long-term care at the North York General Hospital Seniors’ Health Centre, spoke about the accountability challenges nurses face. Participants were invited to ask questions and share strategies and resources. Participants touched on a variety of topics, including promoting and applying research, supporting continuous learning for staff, supporting new nurses, and managing professional issues, such as staff competency and accountability and the changing care needs of residents. Teleconference highlights are posted here. The next teleconference, RN and RPN Roles, is scheduled for September 14. Registration information will soon be posted in What's New on this website or contact Donna Deelarbi at 1 800 387-5526, ext. 6335.
