RN(EC) Practice Review update

Practice Review, a component of the Quality Assurance (QA) program, is an objective way to assess nursing practice to ensure safe, effective and ethical nursing care.

Recently, the program was revised for RNs in the Extended Class [RN(EC)] to better assess those nurses who did not provide direct client care in their practice. RN(EC)s participate in Practice Review after 1800 hours of practice or the first three years of registration, whichever comes first.

RN(EC) Practice Review focuses on the nurse’s consultation network with physicians as outlined in the practice standard Registered Nurses in the Extended Class(Revised 2003). Until recently, the program involved submitting case studies from the nurse’s practice setting that demonstrated her/his ability to meet the standards for consultation. This format assessed the practice of an RN(EC) who had direct client care, but did not assess RN(EC)s in other types of settings, such as faculty in nursing programs.

Last year, a team of CNO Practice Review assessors, staff and a consultant revised the RN(EC) Practice Review to assess better the variety of practice settings where RN(EC)s work. Now, the College will supply those RN(EC)s who don’t have appropriate examples from the practice setting with sample case studies to analyze with the standards in mind.

The College expects at least 70 RN(EC)s to participate in the revised Practice Review by the end of the year.
