Where Your Money Goes

  • Knowledge Management ($25.23)
    Develops and shares knowledge, including communication with members, employers and the public through publications, practice standards and the website. Produces membership statistics. Conducts statistical analyses and research. Maintains technology to support all CNO functions.
  • Investigations and Hearings ($22.69)
    Investigates complaints and reports for the Complaints and Executive (reports) Committees. Supports and implements decisions of the Complaints and Fitness to Practise Committees that involve alternative solutions, such as the Participative Resolution Program. Supports the Discipline and Fitness to Practise Committees.
  • Practice and Policy ($22.66)
    Articulates standards of practice and professional standards. Provides member education and advisory services. Supports the Quality Assurance Committee in developing and implementing the Quality Assurance Program. Supports the organization in the articulation of policy.
  • Corporate Services ($20.17)
    Provides customer service to members and applicants. Supports the College’s operations through building maintenance, finance, office services and human resources.
  • Registration, Examination and Membership Services ($16.19)
    Assesses applicants and registers those who qualify. Renews membership of ongoing members and maintains the public register.
  • Operating Surplus ($1.94)
    Functions as a fee stabilization reserve and provides a hedge against inflation.
  • GST ($8.18)
  • Council and Committees ($4.72)
    A small portion of every member’s fees goes intothe cost of Council and committee meetings andCouncil elections.
  • Executive Office ($3.41)
    The Executive Office provides strategic leadershipto the operations of the College and support toCouncil and committees.

Have you ever wondered how the College spends your $125 annual renewal fee, or how you can get the most from your College membership?

Membership fees are used to fund the College’s programs and services, many of which are required by legislation. The College assesses and registers applicants, maintains a register of members, establishes practice standards for the profession, investigates concerns about nursing practice and maintains a Quality Assurance Program.

Your membership fee also goes toward strategic initiatives that will move us towards our vision of excellence in nursing practice everywhere in Ontario.

For example, the College is strongly committed to supporting members in their practice by providing up-to-date practice standards, member education services such as the Regional Education Network, and consultation services. The College is also committed to working with nurses and employers to address the realities of practice and facilitate quality practice settings. The Knowledge Translation Fellowship (see page 28) and teleconferences for employers and nurse leaders in long-term care (see page 30) are initiatives taking place in 2005.

In 2005, College resources will also be focused on CNO’s participation in the government’s review of the Regulated Health Professions Act. The review is an opportunity for the College to work with government and other stakeholders to enhance the legislation, which governs health professions in Ontario.

Since the last fee increase in 2001, the College has maintained an operating surplus. This year,$1.94 of your 2005 annual fee will go toward that surplus. The College is not anticipating the need for a fee increase to fund operations until 2010 at the earliest.

Your membership provides you with access to many resources and publications. You receive The Standard and access to education sessions and this Website (www.cno.org) that has downloads of publications, including the Compendium of Standards.
