Changes to RNAO insurance program

Nurses who incorporate complementary therapies into their practice and are carrying the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario’s (RNAO) NurseInsure malpractice and business insurance should note that the following policy changes will take effect on November 1, 2005.

  1. Categories 2 and 3, which list a variety of complementary therapies (e.g., iris analysis, reflexology, aromatherapy), will be eliminated from the application.
  2. The remaining category will pertain to scope of practice with the onus on applicants to determine if the services they provide fall within the scope of practice as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Nurses can consult CNO’s Am I Practising Nursing? fact sheet (available at www.cno.org) to help decide if the care they’ve provided meets this requirement. The insurer, ENCON Group Inc., will not require verification from the College as it is the nurses’ responsibility to ensure that they are practising within their scope of practice.

For more information on RNAO’s NurseInsure program, visit RNAO’s website at www.rnao.org (Membership section) or call Marsh Canada Inc. at 1 888 711-8399.
