FeaturesIncreasing Public ConfidenceIncreased openness, accountability, public safety and confidence are the cornerstones of the amendments to the legislation that governs nursing practice in Ontario. On May 31, 2007, the Ontario government passed the Health System Improvements Act, 2007. This Act amended the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), the legislation that governs Ontario’s 23 health care professions. “These changes will help Ontario’s health regulatory colleges be more responsive to the needs of the public,” says Anne Coghlan, RN, the College’s Executive Director. The changes will have a widespread impact on the way health colleges communicate with the public, and how they regulate members and administer programs. The amendments require colleges to increase public awareness of, and access to, information about their members and the profession itself. They will also help regulators improve communication and information-sharing among their members, employers of health professionals, students and other stakeholders.
