COVID-19: Registration options when Emergency Assignment Class ends

CNO will be expiring all Emergency Assignment Class registrations on August 17, 2021.

We are prepared to help members of the Emergency Assignment Class move to an alternate class of registration in a timely manner, if: they wish to continue to practice after August 17 ; and, they meet any outstanding registration requirements.

Here are the registration options for Emergency Assignment Class members:

1. Register or reinstate in the General Class

If you have passed your registration examination, please complete your registration in the General Class. If you have not yet begun an application in the General Class, read Become a Nurse for information on how to begin the application process.

If you were retired, resigned or in the Non-Practising Class before you joined the Emergency Assignment Class and you wish to continue practising, you may be eligible to reinstate your registration in the General Class. Visit our reinstatement page for more information.

To avoid a lapse in your registration with CNO, you can start this process now; you do not need to wait until the Emergency Assignment Class expires.

2. Register in the Temporary Class

If you have recently completed a PN diploma program or BScN program in Ontario and you have not written your registration exam, consider applying to the Temporary Class. You will need an offer of employment.

To avoid a lapse in your registration with CNO, you can start this process now; you do not need to wait until the Emergency Assignment Class expires.

After you have written and passed your registration exam, you may then complete your registration in the General Class. If you fail the exam, your Temporary Class registration will expire.

3. Return to Non-Practising Class or reinstate in General Class

If you were previously registered in the Non-Practicing Class before you joined the Emergency Assignment Class, your registration with CNO will automatically return to the Non-Practicing Class when your registration in the Emergency Assignment Class expires on August 17, 2021. You will then no longer be able to practice as a nurse in Ontario.

If you wish to continue practicing as a nurse in Ontario, you may be eligible to apply to reinstate your registration in the General Class. To avoid a lapse in your registration with CNO, you can start the reinstatement process now; you do not need to wait until the Emergency Assignment Class expires. Visit our reinstatement page for more information.
