Ethics

The consideration of ethical issues is an essential component of providing care within the therapeutic nurse-client relationship. Nurses often encounter ethical situations in their everyday practice. Understanding and communicating the client’s beliefs and values, as well as their own, helps nurses recognize ethical situations and work through them if they do occur.

The Ethics practice standard focuses on the values and expectations of ethical conduct and behaviour for nurses. It addresses ethical dilemmas and provides a decision-making framework to help nurses make informed decisions in the best interest of safe and ethical care.

Objectives

  1. Identify the ethical values that are important in providing and supporting nursing care.
  2. Describe the commitments nurses are obliged to maintain.
  3. Learn the nursing decision-making process, which provides a framework for understanding and working through ethical situations.
