CNO’s statement: Ontario’s “As of Right” plan

The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) protects the public by promoting safe nursing practice. This includes registering nurses with the knowledge, skill and judgment to practice safely in Ontario.

On January 19, 2023, the Ontario government announced it will introduce legislation in February 2023 that, if passed, will allow Canadian health care workers already registered or licensed in another Canadian jurisdiction to practice in Ontario.

We look forward to learning more details about what the legislation will look like and contributing our feedback for how it can best support patient safety.

CNO continues ongoing efforts to register as many nurses as possible in Ontario who have the knowledge, skill and judgment to practice safely. That includes working with the government and other health system partners on initiatives to support additional health care workers in Ontario.

We welcome the opportunity to further build on the record-setting number of registrants in 2022 as we continue to protect the public while supporting Ontario’s health care system needs.
