"As of Right" (AOR) allows qualified nurses who are currently registered in good standing in a jurisdiction in the United States to practice for up to six (6) months in Ontario while CNO reviews your application for registration. Good standing means you are not the subject of any discipline or fitness to practice orders, ongoing investigations, interim orders or agreements resulting from complaints or proceedings. The six (6) months start from the first day of your employment in Ontario. And you are required to inform CNO as soon as you secure employment. To learn more about your accountabilities, please review the Ontario government's "As of Right" Guidance Document.
If you are a Canadian applicant currently registered with another Canadian jurisdiction, you are not eligible to register under “As of Right”. Instead, you will register with CNO under automatic recognition. You can learn more by reviewing the Canada (registered outside Ontario) registration guide.
To be eligible to apply under AOR:
- You must be currently registered in the nursing class equivalent to the one you are applying to
- To apply as an RN – you must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree
- To apply as an RPN – you must have a minimum of a diploma in practical nursing
- To apply as an NP – you must have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree and completion of a university nursing program designed to educate and train NPs
- You must physically live in Ontario to provide nursing care
You are required to have professional liability insurance or similar protection that extends coverage to Ontario.
If you meet the requirements, please complete this initial assessment form. Please note, this is not an application form. We will notify you within five (5) business days of completing this form of the next steps in this process. If you have questions, please contact Customer Service.
