Can Nurses Use Artificial Intelligence Tools to Document Client Care?
According to the College of Nurses of Ontario’s (CNO) Documentation standard (effective February 1, 2026), nurses may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support clinical documentation. However, nurses are accountable for all documentation entered into the client’s health record, including content generated with the assistance of AI. Nurses are responsible for:
- Reviewing and verifying the accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness of any AI‑generated documentation to ensure it reflects their own assessment, clinical judgment, and interventions.
- Using AI tools that are approved by the employer and comply with organizational policies as well as legislative privacy and information security requirements (e.g., PHIPA).
- Obtaining informed consent from the client whenever AI technologies are used to record, transcribe, or document any part of a client encounter.
As AI‑enabled technologies continue to evolve, nurses are expected to exercise professional judgment and comply with CNO’s practice standards and guidelines, organizational policies, and relevant legislation when integrating AI into their documentation practices.
